Augmented Reality (AR) has been a long time coming. We’ve seen it in movies, and we’ve seen it hyped across the industry as technology of the future. At DAQRI, we have AR figured out, and we know how to put it to good, productive use.

In case you haven’t heard, DAQRI Smart Helmet™ (DSH) does just that. With a wearable, human-machine interface, DSH uses augmented reality to connect workers with information and their environments, helping to improve efficiency and productivity.

So let’s break it down.

It’s a Helmet

First things first, DSH is a helmet. That means it’s purpose-built for a work environment. The ruggedness of the helmet, combined with a largest field of view from the see-through display helps users feel comfortable and safe in an industrial environment, indoor and out. And there’s no need to fuss with goggles, a hard hat, headphones, and whatever else you’re trying to fit under there. The eye protection, speakers, and microphone are built right in. Add a Wi-Fi connection and access the web browser and you’ll never want to take it off.

Speaking of Displays

That visor does a lot more than protect your eyes; it also displays information and prompts, as well as all those awesome AR elements. It’s also taking in all kinds of information with not just one, but three different types of cameras, including: FLIR (thermal), wide angle (AR tracking), and color (depth/image processing).

The wide-angle camera tracks, records, and maps the wearer’s surroundings. Without this, the AR programming would not be able to register the environment. Basically, it wouldn’t know what reality it’s supposed to augment and how. Meanwhile, the Intel RealSense Camera has depth perception covered, helping the helmet to “see” like you do, or even better. That doesn’t mean you’ll finally be able to hit that three-pointer, though.

Then there’s the thermal camera, the only one available in a wearable today. This tool can sense heat (see below for other ‘sensitivities’). It has the ability to read both relative temperature and absolute in an environment. That might not sound like a big deal, but it could save a life if an unusual temperature is actually a symptom of a larger, dangerous issue. Since temperature can often go unnoticed without deliberate inspection, the thermal camera shows an easy-to-decipher heat map overlay on the display.

It’s Really Sensitive, In a Good Way

DSH has the most powerful AR sensor package available in a wearable helmet form factor. This helps the helmet to deliver an unsurpassed AR experience.

Remember that Intel RealSense Camera? Well it’s using sensors, too, three actually — an integrated RGB (color) camera, stereo infrared cameras, and an infrared light projector. These work all work together to help the helmet infer depth.

Intel’s Inside

If it’s what’s on the inside that counts, DSH in in great shape. With Intel at the center of it all, DSH is built to perform. The RealSense camera may pull things together, but it’s the Intel Core m7–6Y75 Processor that’s the heart and soul of the helmet. This top-of-the-line processor supports high quality multimedia and the AR applications and functions that make the DSH an ideal work tool.

Accessories Complete the Look

The helmet may just be the ultimate accessory, but a few more couldn’t hurt. Every DSH Developer Edition comes with a suite of AR-ready applications, including remote expert, camera, thermal camera, web browser and media gallery.
